Local vs. regular SEO - and why the difference matters more than you think

Local vs. regular SEO - and why the difference matters more than you think

You might think that SEO is just one thing.

But it is not. And if you get it wrong, which one you actually need, you can optimise for years and not move an inch.

Today I will show you a difference that most businesses do not know at all - and yet it decides whether you get seen.

Maybe you are thinking: "SEO is SEO, right?"

Well... not quite.

And today I will show you why two different businesses can follow the exact same SEO checklist and still one shoots up while the other sinks like a weight into the Vltava.

A few days ago I had a call with a client. He says to me:

"Look, I do not know why I still do not show up on the map, even though I am doing SEO."

And I tell him: "Because you are doing a different SEO than the one you need."

A moment of silence. A pause to think. And then it came:

"Wait... there is more than one kind of SEO?"

Yes. And this is exactly the moment where today's story begins.

The core idea

Local SEO and regular SEO are not competitors. They are two different disciplines. And if you use the wrong one, you can optimise until retirement - and it will not move by a single pixel.

Local SEO - you want to be seen ON THE MAP

Imagine Google as a giant digital crossroads sign.

And someone types into it: "plumber Prague", "heating engineer Brno", "movers Dejvice".

Google looks around and thinks to itself: Who is closest? Who is most relevant? And who can I trust?

And boom - it shows three businesses in that famous Map Pack.

Local SEO deals with exactly this:

  • your Google Business Profile (that is the absolute cornerstone),
  • reviews, their number and quality,
  • consistency of your details across the internet,
  • citations (business directories, listings...),
  • localised information on your website,
  • and trust signals.

The goal of local SEO is simple:

You get up into the map. Right where 78 % of people looking for a local service are looking.

This is SEO for tradespeople, restaurants, movers, electricians, car repair shops. For businesses that actually travel somewhere physically.

Regular (organic) SEO - you want YOUR WEBSITE to be seen

And then there is the second SEO. The one that has nothing to do with the map.

Regular SEO deals with:

  • content (blogs, articles, landing pages),
  • on-page things (title, meta, H1...),
  • the technical quality of the website,
  • link building, website structure,
  • and keywords with informational or purchase intent, but without a location.

It is SEO for e-shops, consulting firms, online projects, education platforms - in short, for anyone where geography plays no role.

The goal of regular SEO:

To improve the website's position below the maps - in the classic blue links.

The simplest explanation I give clients

I tell them this:

Local SEO = you want to be seen on the map. Regular SEO = you want your website to be seen below the map.

And suddenly there is silence. And then comes the line I love:
"Ahaaaa, now I finally get it."

An example everyone will understand

Imagine you are looking for a heating engineer in Brno.

You click into Google and type "heating engineer Brno".

The first thing you see? THE MAP. With three businesses. That is local SEO.

And only below it are the classic web results. That is regular SEO.

And now guess - where do most people click?

Yes. On the map. Because that is where they have the phone number, reviews and a "Call" button.

Why it matters to know what you actually need

If you are a mover, a plumber or a car repair shop and you only do regular SEO...

It is like trying to open a car with a brick. It might somehow work, but it is terribly inefficient.

And if you run an e-shop and you worry about citations in local directories...

Then you are optimising completely the wrong signal.

You want a different key to open a different lock.

A simple recommendation

  • Do you have a local service? → You need local SEO and a Google Business Profile.
  • Do you have an e-shop or an online project? → You need regular SEO.
  • Do you have both? → Congratulations, you have to fight on both fronts.

Summary

Local SEO = the map. Regular SEO = the website.

And once you know which of them you need, you stop wasting time and money.

P.S. The most common mistake? Businesses try to break through in the maps without a Google Business Profile. That is like wanting to play tennis without a racket.
